The 22nd Annual Children’s Illustration Exhibit was held at the R. Michelson Gallery in Northampton this Sunday with a nearly shoulder to shoulder turnout. The guest of honor was legendary illustrator Jules Feiffer, and an award was given to author Roger Sutton by Reader to Reader, a nonprofit organization that spreads literacy through book and computer donations.

The winner of this year’s MassLive.com Ultimate Prom Contest was Dominick Whitley, a senior at Springfield Central High School. His prize consisted of a tuxedo from Formal Affair in West Springfield, a dress for Dominick’s date Joanna Padilla at Just B in Springfield, flowers from Durocher Florist in West Springfield, hair and makeup (that 2nd one just for Joanna) at DiGrigoli Salon in West Springfield, transportation on the open air, double-decker bus from Peter Pan to and from the prom at the Springfield Marriott, and photographic documentation of the whole day by yours truly.

The prom took place on June 2, 2011, the day after a tornado had come through Springfield. That event was on everyone’s mind, and while Dominick and Joanna’s experience, as well as that of their friends, was one of a fun prom, everyone that day was respectful of the events that had affected so many so recently.

Closed off streets made traveling through the city more difficult than all were accustomed to, and the bus that carried everyone to the prom drove through or was adjacent to communities directly impacted by the tornado.

Being able to visually document that day, with seniors enjoying the end of their high school careers while looking forward to the future, was a pleasure.

On July 31, 2010 I was the official photographer invited to document the opening of Leonard Nimoy’s “Secret Selves” photography exhibition at The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, MA. Many of these photos, and others from the day, were sent across the country and around the world as part of Nimoy’s promotion for his “Secret Selves” book.

Large and small prints from the “Secret Selves” project lined the walls at Mass MoCA, and as the evening went on one of my duties was to photograph Nimoy in front of selected prints with the models he originally photographed.

Throughout the event I additionally photographed Nimoy with buyers of his work, with Mass MoCA patrons and leaders, and with his family. I did my best to also document the event unobtrusively, photographing people enjoying the art and Nimoy interacting with the crowd. Here are some photos from the event…

In November of 2007 I was working behind the scenes at the R. Michelson Gallery in Northampton, MA while Leonard Nimoy photographed models for his project that would become “Secret Selves”. That project is now complete and Nimoy’s work will be on display at the R. Michelson Gallery beginning this Thursday, July 29th, when Nimoy himself will be in attendance autographing copies of his new book. The event is open to the public.

On Saturday July 31st, life size prints from “Secret Selves” will be on display at Mass MoCA in North Adams, MA where Nimoy will be on hand during an invitation only event. Both exhibits are ongoing and specific dates can be obtained through their respective web sites.
