  • Seth Kaye is a multiple award winning documentary photographer whom the Valley Advocate has called “one of the best wedding photojournalists in New England”. His years of experience as a photojournalist, combined with an academic background in the fine arts, make him uniquely qualified to document weddings in an unobtrusive, respectful fashion.

Seth’s narrative photographic style reflects a philosophy in which the photographer observes rather than directs, where real moments are free from manipulation and interference. His work belongs to a tradition of photography which relies on seeing and understanding the significance of the moment, and capturing it.

Diane & Eddie’s Prom

Earlier this spring MassLive.com, for whom I occasionally shoot, asked me if I’d be interested in photographing a local prom and following one couple around for the night. After some discussion we decided to think bigger and the project eventually became the MassLive Prom! Contest in which I was honored to be the prize.

Springfield Central High School seniors Diane and Eddie were the eventual winners of the contest, and I spent one afternoon a couple of weeks ago with Diane as she got ready for prom night. I went with her and Eddie to the Castle of Knights in Chicopee where the prom was being held and documented their evening.

I’m posting a few of my favorite photos from the night below, but MassLive has 150 of them separated into three parts which tell the story of Diane and Eddie’s prom night more completely. I hope you enjoy them.

On the wall outside Diane’s bedroom is a photograph of her brother David, who is currently serving in the Army.
Sunlight reflected off the mirror onto Diane’s earring in this almost-silhouette.
Diane’s father Louis played with Kayla, whom they were watching that afternoon, as Diane put on makeup in the adjoining room.
Diane’s mother Antonia helped her get ready for prom night.
Putting on some finishing touches.
Mom was so proud.
Eddie greets Diane’s father as his family also arrives behind him.
Diane pins Eddie’s corsage to his lapel.
On the way out Diane shut her dress in the door, which was kind of funny.
We stopped to take a couple of formal photos nearby on the way to the prom.
Hangin’ with friends…
…and strikin’ poses.
It was one packed dance floor.
The Springfield Central High teachers who chaperoned the evening.
“Look,” she’s telling her friends, “I’ve got my own photographer!”
