On July 31, 2010 I was the official photographer invited to document the opening of Leonard Nimoy’s “Secret Selves” photography exhibition at The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, MA. Many of these photos, and others from the day, were sent across the country and around the world as part of Nimoy’s promotion for his “Secret Selves” book.
Large and small prints from the “Secret Selves” project lined the walls at Mass MoCA, and as the evening went on one of my duties was to photograph Nimoy in front of selected prints with the models he originally photographed.
Throughout the event I additionally photographed Nimoy with buyers of his work, with Mass MoCA patrons and leaders, and with his family. I did my best to also document the event unobtrusively, photographing people enjoying the art and Nimoy interacting with the crowd. Here are some photos from the event…
- Due to the large turnout, smaller groups were let into the gallery so as not to crowd the room.
- The Pavillion was closed off for a reception where guests could mingle before and after taking in the exhibit.
- Nimoy met with fans and well-wishers during the exhibit’s opening.
- Nimoy posed with several of his models in front of their respective photographs, such as with poet Martín Espada and his son.
- Nimoy stopped briefly to collect himself while the crowd around him sought his attention.
- Nimoy and friends, with security close by, rested for a bit after moving to the outdoor pavillion reception.
- Later in the evening Nimoy enjoyed the company of family as the recpetion drew to a close.
- At the end of the day, the question remains…
